Question
I recently purchased a 1GB memory module  for my Dell 4700 desktop.  There are 4 slots in the computer.  The computer came with a pair of 256MB memory modules installed in the slot 1&2.  My question is :  Should I  just put 1GB in slot 3 or should I put it in slot 1, which is closest to the processor,  and move the original pair to slot 3&4? Will it make difference in performance?

Answer
Put it in the third slot, don't move the orginal ram.

Because the system doesn't have any 'base' memory anymore some manufacutres specify a certain amount of ram to be in the first slot, Dell used to do this alot. I haven't worked on a Dell in over a year and am not familure with the 4700.

So to be on the safe side use the third slot.

Your system doesn't use channeling other wise there would be a memory module in the first and third slots.

If you put the memory in and it doesn't startup then you may have the wrong memory module for your system.
