Question
HELLO SIR,
I HAVE A PC WITH CONFIGURATION:
P-4 2.8Ghz
512 MB RAM(DDR-400Mhz)
MERCURY MOBO (MODEL:P1915GLM-Xpress)
256 MB GRAPHIC CARD(8400 GS)
I DECIDED TO UPGRADE MY RAM FROM 512 TO 1GB
I HAVE BOUGHT ANOTHER STICK OF 512 MB(DDR-400),BUT OF ANOTHER BRAND.
WHEN I INSERT THE RAM IN THE SECOND SLOT PROVIDED ,THE PC DOESNT BOOT AT ALL,AND WHEN I CHECK THE NEW RAM ALONE ON THE SLOT WHICH I AM USING FROM BEGINING IT WORKS FINE.
ACTUALLY THE SECOND SLOT DOESNT WORKING AT ALL,WHEN I PUT MY OLD RAM ALONE IN SECOND SLOT AGAIN THE COMPUTER DOESNT BOOT.
I TRIED ALL COMBINATION OF INDIVIDUAL AS WELL AS PAIR OF BOTH RAMS,BUT IN ALL CASES WHENEVER THE SECOND SLOT IS USED THE PC DOESNT BOOT AND ONLY THE RED LIGHT AT THE CABINET REMAINS GLOWING.
IS THE SECOND SLOT IS MALFUNCTION OR IT SHOULD BE ACTIVATED
SOMEHOW ?
ALSO I HAVENT USED THE SECOND SLOT FROM THE DAY I PURCHASED MY PC(2YRS),SO I THNK THERE ARE LESS CHANCES OF MALFUNCTIONING.
PLZ HELP !

Answer
With out knowing the manufacture of the mb and guessing that you only have two slots for memory then the the memory should be dual chanel.

If you have four slots then the memory should go in the thrid slot, they would be labled like this:
1a
1b
2a
2b

Where 1a and 2a are dual chanel and 1b and 2b are the second dual chanel.

Do you have the manual for the motherboard? There may be a jumper on the motherboard that has to be set for single or dual chanel operation.

Check the web site of the manufacture for the manual if you don't have one.

From my experance with a new motherboard your second slot may be defective.
