Question
I have a compaq preserio 5423US. Attached is a picture of the fan that I am trying to remove but cannot figure out how to remove it so I can replace it with a new one.Could you give me step by step instuctions on what to pull, unscrew or whatever the case. PLEASE!

Answer
You have a P4 Processor, on this page you will find instructions for removing the processor, instead of going all the way just remove the heat sink and fan.

Are you replacing just the fan?

If so then there should be four screws in the top of the fan, remove the screws. Then disconnect the power lead from the motherboard header connector. Lift the fan off of the heat sink. Place new fan on heat sink, align the screw holes, replace screws. Connect the new fan's power lead to the motherboard header connector.

Power up the computer and watch the fan, did it come on?

If it did not come on did the power supply fan come on?

If the power supply fan came on but the new fan did not check you power connector, it should be slotted and only go on on way.

Hope this helps.
