On restart BIOS did not activate keyboard. So attached external keyboard via USB. restarted and external keyboard lights came on but computer would not respond to keystrokes.

Without keyboard I cannot select Windows Safe Mode to restore Vista. Could this be a problem with the BIOS?
Thank You

I asked this question of Michael Tedeschi and he responded "check keyboard cable and be sure it snaps in". Unfortunately he left on vacation right after that answer. I have done this twice to no avail. If I leave the computer on long enough it will display the screensaver, but I cannot use the keyboard and the computer will not respond to the external keyboard connected via USB.

ANSWER: 1.right now, if your pc can go into os?

2.if not, and no show on screen, that means your pc stopped somewhere and the point is early.

3.before show, there are two places you should check. if cpu is found, if DDR is ok.

4.if you can open the box, clean cmos is a better way. you can take the battery out and short the two pins for some seconds.

good luck!

QUESTION: I checked about the CMOS battery and on the Acer Aspire 4520 it is soldered to the mother board. I am not qualified to resolder on the motherboard, so I will have to find another solution or junk the computer. It seems to be my only option. Thank you for you time.

Answer
welcome.

1. I think you can change a usb keyboard and change a usb port to test.

2. use a sp/2 keyboard and try.

3. I know the battery is fixed on board. but there is a cable with it and connect with board.

take off and plug it in and try.

4. if there is a clean-cmos-jumper on the board. that's easy to use.

5. remember, if you do cleanning cmos, take off ac power.

good luck!
