Question Hi,
My wife has a seven year old Dell desktop, which serves her needs.
The manual days that the USB inputs are on the back.
Wanting to back up the data on a flash drive, and finding the back of the computer difficult to get to, I bought a cable with a USB male on one end and a USB female on the other. This way I'd only have to get to the back once, After that the USB female would be easy to get to.
However, when I got to the back of the computer I found that the USB inputs wouldn't take the USB male on the cable. The inputs look like they take the sort of modular plug you use for phones.
Question: Seven years ago, did USB cables use modular plugs? If so, is there a USB-to-modular cable?
I called Dell about this, but lots of luck getting them to answer
Many thanks for any help you can offer.
Steve
Answer
Dear Steve,
USB connectors (if back or in front) are the same type just like the cable (Female end) you have purchased. Now there are many systems which were not having USB. So you will have to check on the machine thorougly for them. However you can also check if drives are instaleled for it which will let us know that USB hardware is installed.
Steps to follow to determine if USB is there on your machien or not.
1. Check physically (Which you were unable to find)
2. Check if drivers are installed by Right click on MY_COMPUTER and click on Properties>HardwareTAB>Device_ManagerBUTTON. Thsi will open a new window. Look for Universal Serial Bus controllers entry (Almost of the botton of the list).
If its listed then you have USB hardware. If not then it MAY be that you have hardware but drivers are not installed.
I have attached a screenshot of device manager and USB connectors.
