PC hardware--CPU & Motherboard & RAM - Poor Performance

Expert: Bobbert - 10/5/2009

Question
I am forever trying to upgrade my PC to improve performance, but still is very slow and programs take an age to open and close.  My system is as follows ECS GeForce6100nm-m motherboard, 3gb Ram, 80gb HDD, 64x2 5800+ (2.9Ghz).  I have recently upgraded the processor from 64x2 4000+ (2.0Ghz) but nothing at all has improved.  Can you shed some light on why my system is slow?

Answer
Could you elaborate a bit more on what you mean by "slow", any specific applications having issues? And what is defined as "slow"? (Nothing will be instant, although if we're talking about a few minutes to open some applications, this may indicate a problem).

A few more questions:
What operating system are you using?
Are the majority of your performance issues related to internet resources (for example loading vidoes from the internet, downloading files, or online gaming?)?
Alternately, are you issues related to 3D applications, such as video games?

Furthemore, could you provide some information about the following components:
power supply
hard-drive
graphics adapter
