PC hardware--CPU & Motherboard & RAM - sleep, hibernate

Expert: Ricardo Agudelo - 10/5/2009

Question
What's the difference? When I go to turn my computer off, I am offered these selections in addition to "turn off".

Answer
Hi Chas,

When the computer is in sleep mode, it keeps the memory active, so you can start working at once. When it is in Hibernate, the memory contents are dumped into the hard disk drive, so the memory can be powered down, saving more battery.
The main difference is the computer in hibernate mode will take a little longer to come back, since memory needs to be powered up and filled with data before getting Windows back to work.

Ricardo
