PC hardware--CPU & Motherboard & RAM - dimension 2350 dell

Question
"Hi there Keith! I have my old Dimension 2350 Dell which is down and I can't seem to find what the problem is. I know the hard drive is already about to give out, but the thing that really trips me out is that, when I try to turn it on, a green LED light on the mother board, which sits right next to the main power plug connection and which has about 20 or so pins, starts blinking...  something like two blinks per second, and it just keeps doing that, but the computer doesn't turn on. I remember a while back, it would do this but then after a couple of minutes or so, the green LED light would stop blinking and it would turn solid green and it would stay that way, and only then was I able to turn the computer on by pressing the power botton once again. It would run fine, but after a while it would just crash again, even though sometimes it would work for a long time, but eventually it would crash and I would have to start all over again. Keith, could it be the power supply that already needs replacing, aside from the hard drive. I installed another hard drive which I know is good, but it did the same thing with the LED. Can you help with this problema my friend, or anyone else out here on the forum? I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Best regards and God Bless.
"

Answer
Mario,
I would first go to the dell site and see what the blinking light means. There are beep codes and light codes on most PCs. The flashing light means something specific.

The sporadic crashing before it finally crashed for good makes me think of two things. Overheating or a bad power supply. Over time the paste they put between the processor and heatsink evaporates and no longer conducts the heat away from the processor. Since the entire system crashed and will not boot up the processor may be fried. I hope this isn't it but it is a possibility. The cheapest thing to do is buy a compatible power supply and see if it fixes the problem. If it does not you may be able to buy a used processor. I'm not sure anyone sells a new compatible processor for a Dimension 2350. What OS does it have?
