Question I have a Dell Inspirion 530's. It is 9 months old and runs good. When it was set up Vista SP1 was installed and for the last several months I have had 255GB's free of 283GB's. I recently downloaded Vista SP2 and have noticed for the last 9 days I have been losing 2GB's from my C drive each day. I am now down to 238GB's free out of 283GB's. I have ran my Trend Micro anti virus and Webroot Spysweeper and everything looks good.
I do not download anything. All I do is email and chat on Yahoo Mail. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Answer This could be many things. The update to SP2 will definitely take up some space but I've never heard of someone losing 2GB per day. That is really a lot. The other thing I can think of is Microsoft Updates. If you have the updates set to auto you may be losing some space because of updates that are happening when you don't know it. These updates may be patches for SP2. However, this is just one idea. Like I said this could be many different things. What you may want to do is disable anything you know of that auto-updates. In other words set all your programs that update themselves to manual instead of auto. Disable Windows or Microsoft updates. After doing this wait a few days to see if you are still losing the 2GB of space. Another thing you may want to do is disable system restore or set it up differently. The update of SP2 may have changed the settings on things such as system restore.
This link tells about a similar problem with XP and gives some solutions: http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/97067-losin...
Here is another one for Vista: http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/221975-losing-disk-space.html
The only thing I know for you to do is do the things I said above and see if there are any changes. This way we can rule out these things and go on to other ideas.
