Question I have an old stock Dell Dimension 4550, with 512 M of RAM. I had an empty memory slot, and added a 1 gig RAM module (for a total of 1.5 gig). It worked perfectly. I tried replacing the 512 with another gig of RAM, and the machine stopped booting. I tried various combinations of modules , and it works at 1.5 gigs, but not at 2.0 gigs of RAM. I have the latest bios.
I have seen various posts on the internet where people talk about having 2 gigs, so I wonder what I am doing wrong.
Answer According to this site http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension%204550%20(533MHz%20FSB) your computer's maximum RAM is 1GB. It may push to 1.5GB (if it is actually using all of it?). You can go to control panel>system> and see if it is actually even seeing 1.5GB. I believe you are just going over your maximum RAM.
