Question
QUESTION: i have an hp pavilion a450n pentium 4, 3.00E ghz,512 mb, 160gm, NVIDIA Geoforce FX5200 that quit working. I replaced the mobo with a new ASUS P4SD-LA (Oxford) and also upgraded the HD with a Western Digital 500gb, sata/16mg caviar blue and also upgraded to 1 g RAM. I cleared CMOS but still can't get machine to boot. Windows XP setup loads, but then I get the blue screen with session 3 error. Do I need to upgrade the atx (have 250W) to accommodate the other upgrades? Any help is appreciated to get my machine up and running. Thanks

ANSWER: hey llb,

250W is a very low capacity psu.  an fx5200 isn't the most power hungry card out there but coupled with the sata drive and p4 it might be sucking too much juice for the psu to perform well.  with that said i've heard of that error being caused by a corrupt HD before.  can you verify that your new caviar wasn't doa in the first place?  did it ever work, or can you try it in another pc?  also if you have a spare hd around you should try it in your system.  let me know if you don't figure it out.
good luck,
-DaZ

QUESTION: HD works now that I replaced the 250W with an Antec Earthwatts 430W and now I need to re-install original Windows XP for my Windows XP upgrade to be acknowledged since new HD & mobo don't recognize XP ever being there.  Waiting on ebay to find an original copy of XP--not easy since Vista is all that's out there & I want XP--thanks for your reply.

Answer
yeah that's a bummer with getting a new mobo.  even if you hadn't replaced the HDD and kept the one with the older XP installation you'd probably still be reinstalling as mobo replacements often require windows reinstallation (like 99%) of the time.

i've gotten away with not reinstalling before, but that was only when i bought a new mobo with the same BIOS type as the previous one i had installed.
take care yo,
-DaZ
