PCOD/PCOS - Polycystic Ovaries - Irregular periods & PCOS

Expert: Christy Morgan - 5/23/2009

Question
Hi, I am 30 and was diagnosed (via blood test & scan) with pcos about ten years ago when I was missing periods for as long as three months at a time. I have been on dianette on & off during this time. I have now been off birth control for a year & a half and have had pretty regular periods since(but with a longer than normal cycle, closer to 38 days than 28) but this month I had one period then a gap of about a week and then started another period, not spotting but a proper heavy-ish week long period. I am a bit concerned but mainly just interested what could have caused this, as usually my complaint would be fewer periods not extra ones! I hope someone can give me some advise. Many thanks, Becky

Answer
Becky,
It is not uncommon for women who have normal menstrual periods and NO PCOS to experience a period similar to what you are describing. One irregular bleeding episode doesn't necessarily indicate a problem. However, if this continues to happen or you stop having periods, then you need to see a Dr. I wouldn't worry unless the odd cycles continue. Hope this helps :-)
