Question I'm thinking of going to Fiji for a week in May 2004. Is this a good time weather-wise? Can you recommend the best hotel? I found a package that includes 4 nights at the Outrigger Resort on Nadi and 3 at the Castaway Resort on it's own island. Are they nice? Touristy? Well-run? What would you recommend? My wife and I enjoy exploring and touring. Can you recommend interesting places to see local villages and customs, scenery, etc.? We'd also like to try out some good restaurants, too. Thank you so much.
Marc
Answer Dear Marc
May is a lovely time of the year to Fiji as it is just the beginning of our Autumn and the weather is very pleasant and the worst of the heat is over.
The Outrigger is on the main land on the Coral Coast about 1 hours drive from the airport. It is a new resort and touristy and reasonably well run.
Castaway Island is on an island and take about 1.2 hours on a catamaran - it is very typical of the island resorts and is good if all you want to do is relax by the sea in a bure - the food is average.
To truly experience local life I would recommend that you spend part of your stay in Nadi Town. Our boutique bed and breakfast property is located in the heart of Nadi Town and many visitors to Fiji use it as a base to explore the town and to take tours to the higlands, visit local markets, temples etc as well as to sample the better restaurants which are located in Nadi Town itself.
Personally I would enjoy an island stay and plan on staying in Nadi so that you can explore local life and customs which are not apparent on the tourist strip where the Outrigger is located.
