Pacific Islands - South Pacific cruise stops?

Expert: Mick Maurer - 9/1/2004

Question
Mike.....
We will be taking a cruise in Feb from Tahiti to New Zealand and
wonder if you can suggest any interesting things to do on any of
the following stops.....We like to do things on our own and not
on organized tours much.
Thanks for your time....I've checked several sites (Virtual Tourist,
etc) for info but there's not much I could find.
We will fly in to Tahiti on Feb 14 then sail to  the following:
Rangiroa Lagoon
Raiatea, Tahiti
Rarotonga, Cook  Islands
Vava‚u, Tonga
Suva, Fiji
Dravuni, Fiji
Bay of Islands,  NZ

Bill & Toni
PS...I've sent this same question to Miles

Answer
If you like to do things on your own, my best suggestion would be to pick up the tour brochure from the cruise line, decide what parts you like the best and hire a taxi to guide you.  It usually does not cost more than the cruise ship tours, especially if you can find another like minded couple.  You do want to visit the market in Papeete and if you are in Rarotonga on Saturday, they have an excellent market.
