Subject: opening a resort in fiji

Question
Dear Shalini,

I'm european and I am currently interested in opening a small operation in Fiji, basically a small resort with bungalows and restaurant.
I would like to ask you this:

1) do you consider this a difficult thing to do for a foreign
2) it is recommendable to buy a land and build onto it
3) which island offer the best compromise between tourist presence and wild nature
4) would you recommend any organization to refer in fiji or abroad for this kinf of operation

1000 thanks for answering,
Nik

Answer
Nik

many of the resorts in fiji are foreign owned or funded.

Much of the prime tourism land is not freehold and needs to be leased from the native landowners.

There are many islands in the fiji group - you may need to make a trip to see which area you like before narrowing your search for a suitable location.

I suggest you consider putting an ad under real estate wanted in travelmaxia.com.

Also I suggest you contact the Fiji Trade and Investment Board - They should have a website - if you have any problems let me know and I will find a number and  contact for you.

You will have many legal questions and for that I would  refer you to Babu Singh Lawyers - babusingh@connect.com.fj - Mr Singh is a legal practitioner who has a lot of experience in native land transactions and tourism operation in Fiji.  He can also help you in your dealings with FTIB  and refer you to other professionals you will require eg accountants, architects, insurance experts and financiers.

hope this helps

Shalini
