The following are sample range of questions that I am very comfortable answering: Can a person be Christian and practice Witchcraft? How do you know if you are a witch? What are the Gods / Goddess associated with the element of fire? What is the connection between the cycle of the moon and a woman`s monthly cycle?

Experience
I have been a practicing witch for the past five years. I have studied world religions and the connection between religious practice and performing arts. I am skilled in Tarot readings and creating amulets / talismans.

Pagan/Wiccan Religion - Catholic and Wicca?

Expert: Luna - 4/2/2008

Question
Ok I have a few questions. Hopefully you can help me here. I am catholic and in the catholic church as with christians that the bible tells us not to worship any other Gods. There is only one God. But we also believe that God create heaven and earth with all its creatures as well. As I was looking into Wicca ( curiosity I like to learn about everything different religions is one of them), If God created the earth and you the wicca's worship the earth's elements, Isn't that one and the same? Although you call it One or God/Goddess aren't you still worshipping God in the Catholic sense? As a Catholic if I decided to practice Wicca which I just may, Can I still be batptised, receive communion and confirmation and be married in the catholic churh?  I ask this only because the other reason for my research into Wicca is that my teenage daughter is very interested in it but she does not want to leave the catholic church either. As a catholic myself ( not a 0very good practicing catholic but catholic all the same)  I want her to receive her confirmation and get married in the catholic church if and when she decides to marry. Is that a possibility? It seems to me that Wicca gives you a better understanding, balance and respect for our earth and brings you spirituality or closer to spirituality if that makes sense am I correct? They way I interpretted it you use the elemants of the earth correct? Would she or I have to do spells? What are spells used for? What are used in spells? I know that crystals and or herbs are used for different things like for protecting your home from evil spirits etc, tranquility etc. and I grasping the concept here? I think I am but not sure. Hope you can help.

Answer
Hello Donna,

Well, to start let me just say now if you don't already know, the catholic church and witches have not had the best relationship when it comes to faiths getting along. Even though the time of witch burning have long past, some of the negative feelings towards witches have not faded so easily.

It is possible to be catholic and a witch. But it is a lot harder to be a catholic and wiccan. Wicca is legally recognized by our government as an organized religion. Wiccans refer to themselves as witches, but not all witches are Wiccan. I know this sounds a bit confusing. Here, let me  use an example to explain it to you better.

You go into a room full of people and ask them are they Christian. They all say, yes. Well, that was easy. But then you ask them what kind of Christian they are you start to get different answers- one's Methodist, this one is Catholic, another Baptist, and so on.

Well now you go into another room and you ask the people inside if they are witches, and they all say yes. But when you ask each one what kind of witch they are you might have a Wiccan, a solitary witch, a kitchen witch, a voodoo priest,.... Get what I'm saying?

So now that we got that clarified, I'm just going to assume at this point that your daughter is thinking about practicing witchcraft, not Wicca.

Yes, most of what you stated is correct as far as what witches in general believe. No, you do not have to do spells to be a witch. You don't have to own a robe or any fancy tools. There are witches who use nothing but their mind and their deep connection with the Earth around them to make magic. (Of course this kind of magic takes a great deal of practice).

At their very core, spells are like prayers, just with more visual stuff added to help you focus and concentrate on what you are doing. You may pray every night for healing for a loved one. A witch will do the same with a spell, except they may charge a talisman witch healing power from the Earth and give it to their loved one to wear. You are both hoping for the same outcome, your methods are just different. They are both equal and valid ways to help your sick loved one.

I know of some catholic witches who practice angel magic. They pray to the saints and angels and give offerings to those angels that guard them and their family.

I can not tell you if your daughter will be able to take communion and  confirmation and get married in the church if she decides to mix witchcraft into her faith. These are decisions that she will have to make based on the church community, how she feels and what she grows to believe.

My suggestion is for you and your daughter to read, read, and read some more. There is so much information out there. The more you know, the better of a decision you can make as to whether or not you wish to incorporate witchcraft into your catholic faith. Try to get your hands on information about catholics in places like Mexico and the Philippines where faith is still being mixed with magic. Voodoo is also a good example of how parts of the Catholic faith has been mixed with pagan culture.

Here is a good quote I found on a Yahoo! Answers to a question regarding Catholic witches: "Yes, there are hundreds in Mexico and in the Philippines. They pray to the saints from their Catholic beliefs, use the natural herbs, poultices, and spells of their ancestors of the religion that was there before the Christian religion. Remember, the Christian belief system is comparatively new in many areas of the world and took a hundred years or more to "convert" the natives to become "Christians". Many use the deities because they truly believe they are the powerful saints and the one true God, but they use the old ways to help their Christian beliefs work for spells of protection, demon casting outs, and even blessing homes as well as midwifing. Just because they practice the ancient rituals of their ancestors but yet pray to the Christian God, does not make them non- Christians, but found a way for that faith to work in their life and in others."

Good luck in your studies, I hope this helps.
