Question
Merry Meet! I have been a Pagan for two years now, working with spells for just under a year. I feel I have grown much. However, I have been working for a long time trying to break myself of bad habits. The one that I feel is the most pressing is my issue with overeating. I was hoping there may be a spell that would help me break the habit. I'm being hit on all sides - no matter my mood, if I'm happy, I eat, if I'm sad, I eat, if I'm bored, I eat.

I've even been able to get myself to stop smoking. I do exercise as well. My job is physically demanding and I walk on a treadmill for an hour a day (I have asthma and am unable to jog or run for very long). I'm hoping if I have a spell to do it will help me not rely on food for everything so I can focus on eating better and simply taking care of myself.

I thank you in advance for your time!

Answer
Hi Emily,

Thank you for e-mailing me. Overeating is a serious problem and I am sorry that you are going through that. There are spells that you can do that can help. One traditional way is to make a vow to your ancestors. You could go to a grave of someone who loved you very much in your life and leave an offering of something that they liked in life. You then ask for the strength, courage and awareness to beat your problem. IF you are uncomfortable with this sort of working or if you do not have such a relative there are plenty of other things that you can try. You can carve the word overeating onto a black candle backwards and rub it with a good banishing oil. If you don't have it handy then just mix some red and black pepper with some vegetable oil and use that. Also Scott Cunningham had a useful breaking bad habits spell that you may want to try. You need a fairly large piece of paper, some rocks and a place to perform this. You write your problem on the paper and throw rocks at it knowing that the energy of the Earth is destroying the problem. Of course, as you know, there needs to be some level of mundane action for a spell to work it's best. You should ask yourself why you think that you overeat and then find out how you can get that need in different ways. For example if you eat most when you are bored then next time you are bored, go for a walk or something. You can ask your favorite God/dess to help you in your introspection. Also if you feel so overwhelmed by the problem you may want to try an organization like Overeaters Anonymous. There is no shame in it and there are even Pagan adaptations to the 12 steps (they are pretty much the same for all addictions) Here are some resources just in case you need them:

Again I wish you the best of luck on your path and if you need something else please do not hesitate to contact me again.

Bright Blessings,
Jason
