Question my soulmate, jackie, died saturday, we have both been practising Wiccans for many years (and still learning). She lives in a small village and wants to buried next to her daughter in church cemetry so unfortunately has to have a christian funeral, which I accept, so I would like to know if there is a Wiccan prayer which you could forward to me as soon as possible as I would like to get up and say it a the funeral as I feel it is the right thing to do. I look forward to hearing from you.
Janet, a very heartbroken woman
Answer Dear Janet,
I am so sorry for your loss - this will be a terrible time for you, and I pray that you will be comforted in your grief by the memories of the love you had for each other, and that she is watching over you from paradise.
You don't say whether you worship gods or goddesses, the Goddess, or nature; there is too much variety in Wicca for me to be able to guess as one size does not fit all when it comes to faith.
I'd start a prayer with a request to whatever deity you worship, perhaps:
"Goddess" or "Lord and Lady", or simply "Creator of the World,"
"I stand before you in a dark time,
And entrust to your great care my light -
Jackie, whose smile was brighter than the sun,
Whose delight was in things both great and small,
Who loved completely, and was loved completely.
"I pray you welcome her into the Summerlands,
And that she might rest in your great house.
I pray you guide her to her daughter,
That they may be together in paradise.
I pray you keep me strong in this dark time of mine,
And grant me the strength to live without her
As she would have bid me do.
Grant all the strength to live with her loss,
For there were many who loved her,
And many will speak her name with fondness."
Prayers are very personal things, so you may wish to compose your own to tell the world how amazing Jackie was. After all, it is you that knew her best; only in the spirit of your grief can I know even a tiny bit what she was like. Rest assured, she's watching over you in the afterlife, and you'll be together again when you are called to your eternal rest as well.
