About Alayne Grey
Expertise
I am a Druid and a scholar of Wicca and other forms of Paganism - I can answer people's questions about Wicca, Witchcraft, Druidry (specifically), how to begin Pagan studies, Asatru, Shamanism and so on. I also feel myself competent to deal with the questions of teenage seekers looking to be Pagans, as I am a teenager myself.

Experience
I've been a Druid for almost a year, write essays for Witchvox, and I am currently writing a book on controversial Pagan issues. I am widely read about Wicca and other Pagan paths and about the best foundations for beginning such a rewarding spirituality.

Publications
I am listed under "Alayne Grey" on Witchvox and have written several essays, including one about my own beginner's experience.

Education/Credentials
I am a Pagan teenager completing my A-Levels, having achieved high GCSE awards the previous year in 2005.

Pagan/Wiccan Religion - becoming a pagan

Expert: Alayne Grey - 8/10/2008

Question
I am 14 and heard about paganism through a friend talking about it (he isn't a pagan himself). i liked the sound of it and think it is something i could really commit to and believe in. however, i know there are different kinds of paganism and i don't know which one to choose to follow. also once i've chosen one i don't know where to start in practicing paganism. i cant ask my family of friends as most of them are atheists and will just laugh in my face. can you help me?

Answer
Hi Chelsea,

Well yes, actually I can help! An excellent pair of little books to help you here are "Pagan Paths" by Pete Jennings and "What Do Pagans Believe?" which will tell you basics about what being Pagan is. Worry about practicing when you've decided who and what you are - that's for later, okay? Some good basic books are "Living Wicca" by Scott Cunningham, "Bonewits' Essential Guide to Witchcraft and Wicca" by Isaac Bonewits, and "Bonewits' Essential Guide to Druidism" by Isaac Bonewits. The website www.witchvox.com is a whole community of worldwide Pagans who write essays and poetry, and you can email them to ask them things; or you could join The Cauldron, a Pagan forum where you can chat with people who are as new as you are to this or wise enough to answer all your specific questions.

On choosing - go where you feel called and most comfortable. I started out trying to be a Wiccan and ended up a Druid, because my God reached out and beckoned me. If you find yourself happy in any kind of Paganism, that's your home.

Hope this helps!

Alayne
