I can answer all questions regarding natural spirituality and being a pagan. Being Wicca, Golden Dawn, Shamanist, whatever...is like saying you're Lutheran or Baptist. They are all forms of paganism and all based on natural spirituality. I am Romani (gypsy) and part Lakota (American Indian) and I was raised in natural spiritualism. I am a life path counselor for my group, a ritualist, and a spell weaver. Most of my work consists of guiding people on how to find spiritual peace in a very chaotic material world. Ask me anything.

Pagan/Wiccan Religion - Spirit Animal Guide

Expert: Labyrinth - 6/11/2009

Question
Hello Labyrinth,

Lately I have been wondering about the nature of my animal spirit guide. A few years ago, when I attended a college situated on the border of a large, national park, I had two encounters with a doe and her fawn. The first time happened in November, I was 17, taking a solitary walk in the woods (I love those) and this moment is forever engraved in my memory. The temperature, the sky, the curious glances the doe sent me and the way the autumn leaves glittered on the ground like jewels... I feel like it might have been a spiritual encounter. Afterwards, I felt light-hearted, almost rapturous. I tried to convey the feelings I had to friends and family but could not do so effectively.

The second encounter occured almost a year after, by the end of September, as I was heading for school on my bicycle. I was surprised to find a doe on the way. Immediately I got off my bicycle and crouched as to not scare her. She walked away from me and eyed me warily. What I did not expect, however, was the little fawn hiding in the shrub nearby. Seeing as the mother had walked off a bit, I now stood between the two. The little one wanted to rejoin with its mother but obviously was perturbed by my presence. I stepped back to allow them their reunion. They watched me for some time then headed back in the forest. Because of the annoying black flies that kept aiming at my face and the hotness I felt after my exercise, this encounter didn't held the same mystic atmosphere the previous one had. Nonetheless, it made me quite happy.

I have tried meditation to meet with my animal spirit guide but I don't think I can achieve it. Or I don't need to. I believe the deer (or perhaps the doe exclusively?) to be my animal guide, so that when I meditate, it always comes to my mind and I don't know if it's because I will it or because it truly is my spiritual guide. Those encounters, particularly the first one, still bring pleasant memories to my mind and I feel they allowed me a closer, deeper link into nature as whole.

For additional information, when I was a child and a teenager, my favorites animals were the wolf and the cheetah. I have also always been interested in large felines such as tigers and lions. I have read books and watched many documentaries on these animals. I always thoughts I had a special link to felines and if I were to have animal spiritual guide it would be one of them. Since my first encounter with the doe and the fawn, I now know it was purely a desire to be associated with these powerful predators. My interest and fascination shifted the moment I met with the deers. Now, as for my questions... (I felt I needed to explain myself fully in order to avoid misunderstanding!):

Could these encounters have been with my animal spirit guide?
On the two encounters, I met a doe and her fawn... what is the meaning behind this?
What are the positive and negative traits associated with the deer?

A question completely unrelated but in which I'm very interested... Is it possible to have a spirit animal guide that is exotic? For example: a North American having an orangutan or a tiger. (I've always thought our spirit animals should inhabit the same continent as ours, at least. The region where we grow up and live, its climate, its vegetation and its fauna influence us in very subtle but important ways.)

Thank you for your time.

Answer
The deer may be your spirit guide, but animals are always more relaxed around naturalists and spiritual people.
Meditaion is the only way I know to truly figure that out.
I do know of large cat spirit guide.  I have never heard of orangutan spirit guides.
Nature walking is a great way to connect with the Goddess.

One word of caution - more people are killed by deer than any other animal in America...be careful.  I know it sounds wacko but deer are very very dangerous.

Idea...find a nice clearing where you live and put out a salt lick.
