Pagan/Wiccan Religion - Wiccan's worship

Expert: Christine Zimmerman - 6/2/2009

Question
I was wondering how do wiccans worship...what are wicca services like?

Answer
Merry Meet Leonor,

Well Wiccans do not hold "services" as a regular church would.  We have what are called Sabbats which occur 8 times a year and Esbats which occur once a month on the full moon.  Nature and the great outdoors is generally our "church" weather permitting.

During the Sabbats we honor both the God and Goddess and give thanks for certain things depending on the time of the year.  For instance, our next Sabbat is Litha also known as Midsummer and we generally do ritual to thank the Lord and the Lady for the bounty and abundance of the crops and to look after them so that we have sufficient stores for the winter months ahead.  Esbats are rituals reserved for the Goddess for she rules the night and the moon.  We may draw down the moon, a ritual involving chanting and prayers and we may also do spellwork durng ritual for those things we'd like to see change in our lives.

Each individual is different so our rituals vary greatly as there really are no set rules as to how one goes about it.  It's up to the individual or coven, if that may be the case, to decide what they feel is right when it comes to worship.  There are general guidelines available in books and online but in the end the choice is yours.

I hope that satisfactorily answers your questions.  Should you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Many blessings to you and yours,

Christine
