Pagan/Wiccan Religion - Deciphering words on a pentagram

Expert: Jason - 7/7/2009

Question
Hello!
My daughter recently bought me a necklace, a pentagram with words and symbols on it. We both agreed that I would not wear it unless I knew what the words meant but can't seem to find the answers anywhere....not even the store owner who sold it to her!
If anyone could help to tell me what these words mean, or direct me to a knowledgeable source, I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks for your time and attention!
These are the words: ONI TET RAG RAM MATO

Good Thoughts & Green Wishes,
Paula

Answer
Hi Paula,

Thanks for contacting me. Actually, I do believe I know what it is. The are actually all one word however, the Tet part is first. The word is most likely Tetragramaton or a derivative of it. Now what that means is slightly complex. You see Wicca is greatly influenced by what is called ceremonial magic (or magick). Ceremonial magic has quite a bit of Christian and Jewish material in it. To explain Ceremonial magic with the proper respect that it deserves is a little beyond the scope of this email. Now the tetragramaton is a sort of code which means the four letters. Those four letters are the Hebrew letter Yod He Vah He. Often you will see the English equivalent written as YHVH. In Herbrew it is the name (or at least one of the names) of Yahweh, better known as God now. He is still called Yahweh many times in the bible. Many Wiccans, especially those with a more ceremonialist bent will wear that sort of pentacle because even those it is Judeo-Christian in origin, it is considered to be highly protective. So rest assured it is not a bad thing. Here are a few helpful links:

http://pages.cthome.net/hirsch/tetra.htm (a little more on the Tetragramaton)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceremonial_magic (a little more on ceremonial magic)

http://wicca.timerift.net/history_real.shtml (a Wiccan site that give a good and accurate history of Wicca)

I hope that you found this helpful and best of luck to you on your spiritual path!

Blessings,
Jason
