Pagan/Wiccan Religion - Native American religions

Question
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read my question. I need to do some research on this topic for school, and I was wondering if you could give me some brief background on Native American shamans/witch doctors. For example, questions like "How prominent a role did they typically assume in their respective tribes?" "Were they (Native American spellcasters) expected to work their magic on a daily basis to provide conveniences for people, or only on special occasions (or something in between)?" "What kinds of spells did a typical Native American spellcaster use?"
Obviously there will be significant variations by tribe and type of magic, but if you could just give me some basic background or even point me in the direction of some reference material, I would be in your debt.

Answer
how prominent a role varied greatly by tribe, some tribes were nearly led by their shamans, while in others their role was very minor.  In no case did they work magic for day to day convenience though, magic was a serious thing for the tribes and not something to be asked for lightly.  And each shaman would have his own collection of spells that he learned from his teacher.
