Question
Hello
Thank you for being so kind to take questions from us!
I'm a 52 year old female, Type II Diabetic, Post Cervical Cancer 2001, and have bi-lateral SI Joint Pain. I have been treated for the last year and half at California UC Davis Medical Center. Conditions with Disc and SI joints started in late 2008.
I have had MRI, Bone Scan, US, and Xrays done, with following findings.
DDD with Grade 1 Spondylolisthesis L-4, and L5 also S1. I have Grade 1 Anterolisthesis of L-4 on 5. The combination of these findings produced marked narrowing of the bilateral neural foramen, right greater than left, which presses the bilateral at  exiting L-4 nerve roots. Schmorl's node also identified along superior endplate of L5. At L5-S1, there is a generalized mild bulging disc. Marked facet hypertrophic change narrows the transverse dimensions of the canal. Reactive changes are present at the anterior aspect of S1 with edema seen within this unfused secondary center of ossification. Also have osteoarthritis in lower back.
I cannot lay on my back at all, let alone get sleep at night, unless I lay on my side and then its only couple of hours, and I wake up in terrible pain. I have gotten several exercises for building core which I try to do everyday. Injections did not work. I use ibuprofen twice a day 1200mg. which I hate but it helps with the inflammation, and pain.
Do you think a Neurologist might be able to help with this pain?  What can I do, standing or walking only for max. of 10 minutes.  WOW, what a situation.
Thank you for listening to me, I would appreciate any input you can give me.

Answer
Hi Lynda,

I am sorry to hear you going through such pain with your conditions.  A neurologist may monitor your condition and give you pain medications or injections or suggest surgery if the condition compromise the control of your limbs.

Have you tried seeking treatment from an Acupuncturist or Chinese herbalist?  These two methods of therapy can be very effective in treating your conditions.  However, if you experience severe pain and loss of muscle control in your lower legs and low back, please consult with your doctor for further evaluation.

Good luck and God bless you Lynda.
