Subject: Feathered Elipse

Question
In Paint Shop Pro 8, I have a photo of a friend in his car.  I have put some text in a layer above the photo.  But, the text is hard to read with the photo in the background.  So, I want to put a white ellipse in between the text and the photo so the text is easier to read.  So far, I’ve got it figured out.

But, I want that white ellipse to feather into the background so there is not such an abrupt transition from the photo background to the white ellipse.  Darned if I can make the ellipse feather into the background.

Can you please help me?

Thanks  (This was soooo easy in Microsoft Image Composer – I guess that dates me.)

Answer
Hello Roger,

There are a few different ways to create the faded edge.  A quick and very common way to accomplish this is:

1.  Create a raster layer between your original image layer and your vector text layer.

2.  On your newly created raster layer, use the Selection Tool to create an ellipse.

3.  Go to the Selections menu > Modify > select Inside/Outside Feather.

4. Enter Feather Amount and choose between Inside, Outside, or Both.  Choosing Both will give a soft fade.

5. Then click the OK button.

6. Use the Flood Fill Tool and fill the selection with desired material.

7. Deselect the ellipse: Ctrl D or Selections menu > Select None

I hope I could help you!  Enjoy creating!
