Expertise
I can answer on how to use Paint Shop Pro in many situations; creating graphics for games, editing photos, pictures, etc... I am not very confident in using `masks` though, but apart from that, i`m experienced in most other parts of the sofware, though. You can ask me how to use different tools or `how do i make this like this?` and I am willing to help anyone

Subject: Transparency problem

Question
Ok, I thought of myself as fairly knowledgeable on this program, but I'm having a big problem.  I have several .GIF files I want to put on the internet with transparent backgrounds.  When I "save-as" and use the run-optimizer or the wizard I'm getting one of two things.  If I use the keep original colors, which is the quality I want, it is just the logo with a white background on the internet.  If I use the "web-safe" colors, the entire picture is grainy and even has some grainy blotches of the background color I used in around the logo, but is somewhat transparent.  I looked for a websafe.pal thinking maybe that would help and couldn't find one, but I'm not sure what to do now.  Thanks!

Answer
Hello there,

When you have your .gif open in PSP, convert it to 256 colours using this method:

1. Convert it to 256 colours by pressing Shift+Ctrl+3 or going to Colours> Decrease Colour Depth> 256 Colours (8 bit).

2. Select 'Optimised Octree', 'Error diffusion', and 'Reduce colour bleeding'. (...And nothing else!)

3. Press ok; this should now have created a suitable colour change.

4. Go to Colours> 'Set Palette Transparency' and select the correct colour around the object.

5. Press OK and save as a normal .gif file; the transparency should automatically work.

Hope this Helps - Do type back if it doesn't!

Kindest Regards,

David.
