In General Program Preferences you can select remember last file type in save as dialogue. This will give you a default save as file type.

The above is NOT the answer.  If you save most of your images as jpegs, then MUCH SIMPLER is this:

PSP will remember the last file type that you saved something as.

So go to File/Preferences/General Program Preferences/Dialogs and Palettes and simply check the box that says "Remember last type used in file save-as dialog".

Easiest way is to ;

Run REGEDIT and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JASC\Paint Shop Pro 5\SaveAsDialog

In there is a REG_DWORD key called “SaveAsPSPFormat” with a value of “0x00000001 (1)”. Right click on the name of this key and change it so that it says “SaveAsJPGFormat”. Close REGEDIT and run PSP again. SaveAs should now default to JPGs. This is how I have mine set up too; I don't know anyone who uses PSP either.

It's actually very simple to set a default "Save As" type.

Save a file, at this stage it will be PSP default. Scroll & find the one you want, eg JPG. Save the file.

Now click on FIle on the menu bar, go down to Preferences, and choose 'General Program Preferences' Click on "Dialogs and Palettes" then check the 3rd box down on the left..'Remember last type used in file save-as dialog'

Now click OK, back track. Open a file to save & it should be JPG from now on
