About Judy
Expertise
I can answer ALL questions related to watercolor paintings, except appraisal or artist identification. I can answer general questions about oil, acrylic, Chinese painting, and other media. I am NOT an art appraiser at all for any kind. I can only answer questions in aspects of materials, techniques, and critiques. I do NOT have the access to records of auction, painting pricing, or artist files & works, unlike art gallery dealers or art appraisers. I would not know how much an art piece is worth, but I am only an expert in the "art form" but nothing to do with VALUE.

Experience
Professional watercolorist for decades. Knowledgeable about all media, but not in value or pricing.

Education/Credentials
BFA in Fine Art, Painting MA in Art

Question
Hello,
I inherited a painting by the above artist entitled "Old Timer."  I have found very limited information on the artist online.  I have contacted an appraiser, but am afraid that I will have to pay for an appraisal even if it is a worthless reproduction!  It is numbered only with "24" and signed "Rodecker."  It has an original (very old) certificate on the back which values it at $1000 at that time.  Is it true that numbered paintings that look like original oils are reproductions?

Answer
Hi, Penny,

It can be, but not necessary.

Any reproductions can be made just like the originals with natural textures.  Some of these have numbers, but some don't.  There is a huge difference in value between a reproduction and an original.  However, some reproductions worth much more than others, especially those which are made with artists consent and limited editions.  Some artists even sign the reproductions.  Those reproductions signed by artists are worth even much more than limited editions.

Some originals are actually hand painted with each brush stroke.  They are numbered, because they are painted in a factory fashion.  These artisans are highly skillful but employed by the painting production companies.  Usually these artisans are out sourced.  The signatures are usually just made up.  These artisans do not sign their own names.
