Question
QUESTION: Hello.  I've been asked to organize a kids group painting a mural on a plywood and rough beam surface.  Could you give me any pointers on how to prepare the surface, and what sort of primer to use for acrylic paints?  I'd appreciate any help!

ANSWER: Hi Bryn,
Thank you for you question, all you need to do is make sure the surface is cleaned, so that no dust or oily substance is on the wood you may want to sand it if it is not smooth, then go buy some acrylic Gesso Primer in any art supply warehouse.  Then just roll or brush the primer on, let it dry and put on another coat.

You are then ready to paint.

QUESTION: Hello Josef-Peter.  This mural will be outdoors.  Would you recommend any specific types of paint or varnish?  Also, how much paint covers a 5 X 20 foot area?
Thanks so much.
Bryn

Answer
Hi Bryn,
Here is a link to where you can buy a good grade of acrylic paint which is best to use outdoors, you won't find these prices in your local art store.  This website is for professional artists and you get some really great discounts.  The brand I have picked for you is great since the price is the same for all colors and very cheap but good quality for murals.

Acrylic Varnish Link:http://www.aswexpress.com/discount-art-supplies/online/4626/art-supplies/5

You will also find brushes on this website.

As far as coverage, that would be hard to calculate because unlike house paint which covers 300 sq. ft. per gallon, artists paint is not put on with rollers, but brushes so the thickness varies, and then there is waste from paint drying on the pallet.

Just to guess I would buy 15 tubes of titanium white, and four of each color that your going to use to start with.

I hope this helps you somewhat.

Regards

Josef-Peter
