Painting - Painting on a previous varnished painting

Expert: Robert M. Vincent - 8/18/2009

Question
I have an oil painting which I varnished with Damar Varnish some 10 years ago. I would like to add some details to part of the painting. Can I mix varnish to my linseed oil and turpentine medium to get the second layer to adhere?

thanks for your advice

Answer
Dear Marilyn,

It is possible to add details to your painting but you need to first remove the existing Damar Varnish layer. Then proceed to add the details and let the painting dry.  Once the painting has dried, you can cover the painting with a new coat of Damar Varnish.

I'm quite sure you can find websites that will give you instructions on short cuts but I would highly recommend that you not try any short cuts; you'll be unhappy with the finished painting.

If you have any additional questions or need further information, please DO NOT HESITATE to contact me!  Good Luck and thank you for your very interesting question.

Sincerely,
Robert M. Vincent
