Painting - Protecting Marker on Canvas

Expert: Robert M. Vincent - 8/21/2009

Question
Hi,

I just had an artist draw on a canvas for me (acrylic gesso primed for oil and acrylic painting) and I assume it was permanent marker she used. I want to protect the drawing and ensure the marker does not fade or smudge over the years.  Is there a spray you suggest using to protect the drawing that will not cause the marker to smudge or run on the canvas once applied?

Thanks!

Answer
Dear Mary,

I cannot recommend using a spray fixative on your drawing without knowing that the marker(s)  that was used was permanent.  You obviously value this drawing, so I would recommend that you NOT USE a spray fixative since you do not know the permanency of the drawing markers.

However, you can still protect your drawing by having it framed and a glass plate placed over the drawing.  I understand that this recommendation may be more expensive but it is truly the safer play!

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any additional questions or need further information.

Sincerely,
Robert M. Vincent
