Painting/Mildew on Print/Matting
Expert: James Few, PSA - 11/10/2005
QuestionHi.
I hope you can help. I have mildew on my matting on a print of mine. Do you know what I can use to remove the mildew? (something that won't hurt the matting itself).
Thanks.
Lisa
AnswerMold is a potential problem for all art works without climate control. However, even in the warm humid climate of the Gulf south, where I live, the chances of developing mold are relatively slim if paintings properly framed and stored. But the problem still exists and cannot be ignored when there are valuable art works involved.
The use of thymol crystals or thymol solution soaked blotter paper added to properly framed and sealed pastels will prevent mold formation, however, climate controlled conditions are the best protective measure.
I know of no commercial fungi protected supports. Butt paper and other pastel supports can be easily mold-proofed in advance with the addition of a fungicide. Some authorities warn, however, that fungicides might have deleterious effects on the support over time. Nevertheless, I would avoid using fungicides on thin papers. The easiest way to application is to spray it on. Make a solution of raion of 1 quart pure grain or dentured alcohol and one level teaspoon of sodium orthophel]nyl phenate (beta napthol). Apply with a hand sprayerin a well ventilated areauntil support is fairly dampened. It will dry in a few minutes and be ready for use.
To remove mold is difficult but it might be done by picking off growths with a small brush. Spores are still present even though unseen. Exposure to direct sunlight will usually kill the spores - however, the UV radiation can embrittle paper and fade colors so care must be taken not to overdose. One to 1-1/2 hours should be safely adequate.
A comprehensive chapter on mold and pastels can be found in Alan Flattman's book 'The Art of Pastel Painting.' I excerpted the above information from this book. It includes information on how to prevent and or remove mold from pastels.
It is a Watson Guptill publication -- ISBN 0-8230-0274-8
