Subject: Painting with Semi-Gloss on New Drywall

Question
We have had to replace the drywall in our family room.  We have hired someone to do this for us.  This room was painted with semi-gloss paint.  When we stand in the room during the daytime, it looks pretty good.  However, during evening and the early morning hours, there are spots all over that almost look like the paint is uneven.  Our contractor says this is shadowing and is to be expected.  To us, it looks like uneven painting.  Is this really to be expected with semi-gloss paint?

Answer
Hi Jennifer
I’m not exactly sure what your contractor is talking about…if the gloss is uneven; it’s called “flashing” and has to do with the porosity of the surface of the substrate. Here is a link to some causes: http://www.sherwin-williams.com/do_it_yourself/painting_techniques/painting_prob...

So, it’s possible it wasn’t primed properly, the quality of paint was not very good, etc. Also, gloss and semi gloss paints will show every minor unevenness in the wall……variations in texture, nail holes not filled properly, etc. The more matte the paint is, the better it will be in hiding uneven texture.
I hope this helps!
rebecca
