Experience I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. I am also an authorized Aqua Finishing Solutions Distributor and a certified training instructor for the Society of Decorating Professionals.

Expert: Cyndie Stefanik Date: 6/24/2008 Subject: Do you need to prime vinyl patching before painting it?
Question Our contractor patched some areas of our new drywall walls using a vinyl patch. Even though the entire walls had been primed and painted before doing this, he stated that you do not need to reprime before painting over these areas. he said you would need to prime a traditional plaster patch, but do not need to when using a vinyl patch. This is the interior of our family room.
Now, we are seeing "patchy" areas all over the room, especially at early morning hours and sunset hours. this is a semi-gloss paint.
We are wondering if the "patchy" areas we see at certain hours are a result of not priming these areas. These areas are very difficult to see in the middle of the day or late at night with artificial light.
We appreciate any insight you can give.
Answer Hi Jennifer,
It has always been my understanding that you should prime over vinyl patch as well as any others patches. If you are seeing spots, then it'a probably the primer causing it. Unless there is some new vinyl patch product that I'm not aware of, it really should have been primed.
I'm sure this is not the answer you wanted to hear. You may be able to spot prime those areas and repaint just the areas you patched....but again, you may see the touch up areas of the paint. If that doesn't work, you may have to begin again to hide it completely.
I wish I had better news. Thanks for asking me.
