Painting & Wallpapering - painting wooden framing

Expert: Rebecca Bushner - 10/16/2009

Question
I am having a 50 or 54  inch round mirror made with a 7-8 inch layered wooden frame with a beveled mirror.  My goal is to have this mirror look silver leafed, custom glazed.  How might I achieve this finished look?  Also-- the mirror size-- this will be placed in an alcove in a Dining room above a buffet table that is 66-68 inchs in width and ample ceiling height. The walls are dark and the room needs to be brought to life.  Thank you

Answer
Hi Susan
The best way to get a silver leaf look is to silver-leaf it. Since leafing is an art that isn't that easy to do (I took a 2-day workshop in leafing aimed at interior designers rather than DYIers...look around for a similar class), I suggest you hire a special-effect painter (aka Faux finish painter) to create the mirror of your dreams. I can recommend a master special-effect painter in the San Francisco Bay /Monterey Bay area of California if you are in that area. Try yellow pages for this type of work as well.

As for the wall colors. I'd do the mirror first then pick colors to complement the mirror frame finish.
Good luck!
Rebecca
