Question Hi, I'm going mental I hope you can help?
I live in a Victorian tenement with high ceilings and plaster coving. I'm having problems with a number of decorating issues, including
. How to treat flaking paint on wood and plaster
. Deep and shallow cracks running across ceiling and down into coving
. Difficulties in successfully removing all paint from wood and plaster. The wood still looks rough and dirty after using nitromors
. Sanding down and preparing woodwork. There is so many scratches and gouges, when I try and fill them with filler/decorators chalk it looks worse
The reason I started stripping the paint off the wood is due to drip and brush marks in the old paint. There were large areas of flaking and peeling paint. It would appear the previous occupant decided to paint directly over teak varnished wood. The white gloss didn't seem to have reacted well with the varnish. There's so many unsightly cracks
I'm overwhelmed at how time consuming and difficult this restoration exercise has become.
Do you have any methods of creating a neater finish in a more realistic time scale?
Thank you for your time, look forward to your reply.....I'm at the end of my tether :-]

Answer Karena,
Sorry there is no miracle product or method that will replace careful preparation.
A few tips that might help you along are the following.
Always use professional tools such as scarston scrapers and Tang filling and stripping knifes.
I would not use chemical strippers such as Nitromors, these days there are many safer stripping materials and also a product called Peel-Away which is a jelly applied to area and then covered with a plastic blanket which you just remove after a period of time.
Also available now are Lightweight Fillers which are much easier to apply and sand, avoid decorators caulk other than for tops of skirting and door jambs.
Finally I would always use sanding sponges these days they never clog and tend not to leave scars.
