Painting & Wallpapering - wallpaper sizing

Expert: Rebecca Bushner - 10/17/2009

Question
I have removed the wallpaper and glue from my plaster walls.  Now I am left with the sizing.  It is very tacky.  How do I go about removing the sizing.  I have tried vinegar and hot water and I have tried TSP and hot water.  I think the TSP works better, but not great.  Also, do I HAVE to remove it or can I just paint over it?  Thanks in advance

Answer
Hi Kathy
What you are describing is probably glue. Sizing is a primer used to make wallpaper easier to remove.
Here is great information on old wallpaper glue removal: http://www.ehow.com/how_2282901_remove-wallpaper-glue.html
OR try these instructions; this site also tells you about the pitfalls of painting over wallpaper:

IF you absolutely have to paint over the glue: use a Zinsser (Google) primer product. Check out their website for their many primer options or try talking to the staff at your favorite premium paint store that sells Zinsser primers.

Good luck!
