Painting & Wallpapering - spraying paint

Expert: Ed Kuchar - 11/10/2009

Question
Hello Ed.
Thank you for taking my question.
I have a 12x20ft. popcorn textured ceiling to paint.
I am using Bher Ultra paint (paint and primer in one).
Previously heavy smokers in house so I need two coats.
I would like to spray it with my Wagner power painter.
Question..
Do I need to thin the paint?
Should I be content to roll it on and forget the Wagner?
I have used the Wagner many times with good sucess but only for oil based stain outdoors.
Your comments appreciated.
Regards
Eileen

Answer
You mentioned there were heavy smokers in the house prior.
From my past experience, the ceiling should be primed with an oil primer. Nicotine "bleeds" through latex paint or primer.
If you want to try using Bher Ultra Paint (paint and  primer in one), what you could do is paint a small section (6" square), let that dry, and see how it looks. If it looks ok, I'd say paint the popcorn ceiling with Bher paint. If not, prime first with an oil primer.
As for thinning, the paint, I like to thin my paint (when rolling or spraying).
Thin it down up to a cup of water per gallon.

Hope that helps.........any other questions, just ask.....
