Experience
I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. I am also an authorized Aqua Finishing Solutions Distributor and a certified training instructor for the Society of Decorating Professionals.

Painting & Wallpapering - Bright living room

Question
Hello - I am absolutely hopeless when it comes to selecting the right paint! I just moved into my first home, which is very exciting... it is a smaller house but has great light coming in, particularly in the large living room. The entire house has been painted yellow - now, it's a nice shade of yellow but it's a little much for the whole home. I was thinking of leaving the yellow in the kitchen and eat-in dining area as they are all one room but was looking at a more neutral colour for the living room (and potentially the hallway too).... which are on either side of the kitchen.

I have painted 6 little sample spots and can't find the right warm tone yet... in order of preference, the best three I've tried are matchstick, white down, and antique white but I still haven't found the right one. The matchstick colour seems to blend best with the yellow but it's a little too dark, I think... any suggestions??
I've attached a picture of the living room (with the previous owner's furniture... so disregard the colour of the couches ;)
Thank you so much for input!!
Stephanie

Answer
Hi Stephanie,

I think Farrow and Ball is the manufacturer of the Matchstick color which I was able to find online.  Unfortunately I don't have their paint decks in my office.  But just based on the picture (and I know computers can really distort colors...I think a cream ivory (which looks like the direction your heading) would be a good way to go.

Do you have Benjamin Moore in your area?  If so, take a look at Milky Way.  It's a very nice ivory that will blend nicely with yellow.

I hope this helps you.  Let me know if you have any other questions.
