Experience I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. I am also an authorized Aqua Finishing Solutions Distributor and a certified training instructor for the Society of Decorating Professionals.

Question I am in the process of purchasing my first place, which has a lot of upgrades throughout, however, I am not crazy about color of the newer carpets in main room of the condo. The carpet in the the living room and dining room is a teal color. On top of that there isn't much lighting in the room, there is the dining room window, and the slider doors. What color can I paint my walls that will take focus off of the carpet, yet, brighten up the room due to lack of lighting in the room? For now, it looks like the carpet is going to have to stay. In time, I would love to have pergo floors put down in the dining room, and from there change the carpet in the living room. Any thoughts?
Answer Hi Melissa,
The best way to tone a color down is to paint similar colors around it so that it blends in versus stands out. The only problem with that is I'm sure you're not looking for a teal/green or blue wall. So my next suggestion is to go more neutral like Benjamin Moore Arizona Tan which is a really good color with teal (blue-green). This combo will give the carpet a more updated look since it is a very trendy color combination right now.
I hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any other questions.
