Painting & Wallpapering - Primed & Painted Trim is chipping

Expert: Tony Gallagher - 4/21/2009

Question
I primed and painted all of the wood work in my home and now spots are chipping down to the wood.
I cleaned the wood (not sanded)
I used an oil base primer
I then painted with a high gloss latex paint

Now all my kids have to do is nick it with a toy and it chips off.

Why is it happening? What do I do to fix it.

Thank You,
Jenn

Answer
Jennifer,

I am not sure without seeing the problem .  However it does sound like lack of adhesion and not intercoat adhesion.

What I mean is the gloss is chipping to the substrate and not back to the primer, therefore it would appear that the primer is not sound to the wood.  There is no simple solution to this problem, you will have to remove all lose and suspect material and spot prime with a specialist primer such as one of the Zinsser range, which act like double sided tape.

It may be that the latex gloss paint also is too soft for any knocks and you might have to revert to an oil based product.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Tony
