Experience I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. I am also an authorized Aqua Finishing Solutions Distributor and a certified training instructor for the Society of Decorating Professionals.

Question We are adding a new study to our house. The rest of our house has a medium oak stained baseboard and trim. The new room will be opening up to our kitchen and living room area. However, we will be doing hardwood floors here ( kitchen has tile, living room has carpet). The problem we have is 1. Should we try and match ( exact match is impossible) the existing baseboard stain in the house. This might restrict us in the flooring color we pick. 2. Should we just paint the baseboards and trim white semi-gloss so we have more flexibility in the choice of flooring. We have 2 doors that have already been painted the linen white that we have on the walls.
Answer Hi Joya,
I would go with the linen white since it already exists on the doors. You could also add some medium oak shelving in the new study to just pull the color in from the other rooms to make it feel more connected.
Another thought is to incorporate an oak inlay (border or design) onto your new hardwood floor... then keep your based boards in a medium oak color to blend with the other rooms.
I hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any other questions.
