Experience I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. Question My husband and I are purchasing a new home. The dining room has a chair rail and above it, it apppears if the wall has been painted in a Venetian plaster techique but I am only guessing and basing that on episodes of Trading Spaces! It does have a slight texture that appears as if was applied with a wide putty knife, then paint was brushed on in wide "swoops" and it definitely has a shiny, or waxy, appearance. And I do NOT like it. What special preparation do I have to do in order to paint over it? I don't hate the texture part of it but I do hate the color and the overall sheen.
Please tell me that a good coat of pimer and paint will do the trick and sanding will not enter the picture.

Answer Hi Jane,
Some venetian plasters have a wax final coat that require an alkyd bonding primer before painting. There are so many plasters out there right now, it's hard to know which one was actually used by the previous homeowner. This primer is the best way to go about it.
This of course doesn't affect the texture but will correct the color issue. I hope this helps you. Let me know if I can help you any further.
