Experience
I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. I am also an authorized Aqua Finishing Solutions Distributor and a certified training instructor for the Society of Decorating Professionals.

Question
we just purchased a home that is a tuscan villa design. I'd like to have the main areas of the home(living room, den, hallways) painted in a ragging faux with tobacco/coffee glaze. I'm not sure what base color to use? Is SW antique white too light as a base color for the glaze? In the master bathroom, I'd ike it a little darker with a "peachy" hue,yet st ill with the dark glaze. Any recommendations? Finally, in the dining room, I have decided on SW harmonic tan, however I'd like to paint the ceiling a green tinted base coat with a gold metallic glaze on top. I am considering SW High Tea as the base. Not sure what i'm doing. Please help! :)

Answer
Hi Alex,

Antique white should be strong enough, you can even go slightly  deeper if you'd like.
Biscuit may be a good choice for your master bathroom for a base coat.  It will give the base a nice warm background.

For you ceiling, High Tea will be great with a gold metallic.  But I have to tell you, metallics can be tricky.  Just practice first on a sample board.  I'm not sure which technique you're using to accomplish this, but sometimes the gold on top of paint can look harsh.  You may have to paint the base coat, then add a layer of gold, then soften with another layer of paint in a glaze type of application so that the gold just peaks through in certain areas.

The are some great metallic paints that are easy to work with such as Lusterstone (which is available on my website copingwithcolor.com).  The application can be done like a suede technique if you've ever tried that.  I have done both the paint method and the Lusterstone method and if you need more info, just call or email using the information below.

Thanks for asking.  I hope this helps you.
