Question QUESTION: I want to pain our recessed eyeball light trim and the housing that fits inside the recessed can to match the ceiling paint. We have 9 eyeball lights to install and they are white....we don't want them to stand out but to blend into the ceiling color...so we want to match the color of the eyeball trims and the ceiling.
Question: What type of paint should be use? Would powder coating be ok or do we need to use paint that is heat resistant.
ANSWER: Ann,
Well you can not powder coat in situ so as long as you use a primer to adhere to the substrate you can use any finish you like.
My favourite primers are made by Zinsser (easily available on the Internet) They have several primer sealers that act like double sided tape adhering to the substrate and making a sound base for your preferred finish
Heat resistant paint will not be neccessary.
Hope this helps

Tony

QUESTION: I just got this response to my question if it would be ok to paint the trim of the white Halo brand recessed lights from the company via an e mail.Their response was: "Painting the trim causes a potential fire hazard. Painting the trim alters the URL rating on the fixture & voids the warranty." I haven't installed the inner can and trim on the recessed lights yet, so, they could be professionally painted using a powder coating or some type of heat resistant pain. I have asked this follow up question of the company and as yet have not gotten a response. I can't imagine how painting the trim and inner can could present a fire hazard and void the ULR rating and void the warranty. I should ask the company what type of paint they use when they paint them in the factory. What do you think??? Does this make sense?
Answer Ann,
Absolute nonsense there are no regulations, to my knowledge covering trim.
However the serious part is their warranty, they are within their rights to stipulate the finish. It will be interesting to hear their response, as I doubt that they are using a flame retardant or heat resistant powder coating. Because the trim is non combustible material it will only require spread of flame regulations, and I bet they are using no such product.
As stated though you can not expect warranty if they do not agree with any treatment you pursue.
