Experience
I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. I am also an authorized Aqua Finishing Solutions Distributor and a certified training instructor for the Society of Decorating Professionals.

I am a regular guest on Good Morning Erie, WJET-TV, an ABC affliate as the Princess of Paint, where I provide decorating, painting techniques and problem solving for viewers.

Painting & Wallpapering - Painted Floor --- STICKY

Question
Cyndie,
I painted an enclosed front porch (it is a non-insulated room with very good windows and glass/screen door)four days ago and it is still very sticky --- I walked on it, unfortunately, and I can see my foot prints in some spots. Basically, it does not seem to be dried, and I am afraid of walking on it because of the prints, and also don't want to put furniture in it yet, as it appears unusable at this time. Anything I can do???

I painted it with with two coats of Kilz 2 Latex --- a "fast drying, water-based, multi-purpose primer-sealer-stainblocker that can be topcoated with latex or oil-based paint." OOPS, it said it is not recommended on flooring:-( Well, that is what I did --- seemed okay, and it dried well. Then, I topped it with Porch and floor paint called Behr Premium Plus which says it is for interior or exterior. So, the reason I used a primer was because the floor was a bright blue color that I wanted to cover with a forest green color.

Thank you for responding,
Cheryl

Answer
Hi Cheryl,

Generally speaking oil primer can go over latex or oil paint, but latex primer should only go over latex paints.

The first question is what kind of paint was on the porch to begin with?  If it was oil, that may be your problem.  Typically, I use an oil based primer (I believe Kilz comes in both a latex and oil version), then topcoat with latex or oil.

Also, I have heard this once before with Behr not drying.  I would recommend closing the porch windows and running a dehumidifier to see if that helps.  I'm sure it will dry over time, but just how long that is, I'm not sure.  Depending upon your geographical location, humidity can be a real problem with painting anyways.  It might be as simple as that.

I hope this has helped you.  Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
