Experience
I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. I am also an authorized Aqua Finishing Solutions Distributor and a certified training instructor for the Society of Decorating Professionals.

Question
hi i just bought a home that has royal blue carpet, my furniture is brown, i wanted to know can i paint my walls a pale pink and will the dark furniture work with this scheme? thanks.

Answer
Hi Gensherry,

Actually you may want to consider a mid-tone pink such as something towards the middle of a paint strip.  The general rule for color value (lightness and darkness of color) is that you should combine colors 2-3 shades lighter or darker than your color.

For example, let's say your royal blue carpet color would be found on a paint strip towards the bottom of the strip.  If a paint strip has 7 colors on it, chances are the royal blue carpet would fall towards the bottom of the strip (6 or 7).  If this is the case, then the pink most likely falls at the top of the paint strip since it's so light.

To solve this problem, just move the pink to a deeper shade on the same paint strip to avoid too much contrast.  The brown furniture will work just fine, especially if you move your pink to a more mid-tone range.

I hope this helps you.  Let me know if you need anything else, I'm happy to help you.
