Experience
I began as a decorative painter/artist 15 years ago. My work has appeared in magazines from award winning designer show houses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Architectural Digest. Most recently I have spent the last 3 years creating, developing and patenting a numerical color selection system that takes the subjective nature out of color. Since it is numerically based, color can be chosen quickly and accurately. For the past year, I have conducted training seminars for the "Color with No Regrets" System to decorating professionals around the United States. My background in decorative painting/art, has given me real life experience of how color works but more importantly why it works based on sound color principles. I am also an authorized Aqua Finishing Solutions Distributor and a certified training instructor for the Society of Decorating Professionals.

Painting & Wallpapering - paint color for dark house

Expert: Cyndie Stefanik - 6/24/2009

Question
Hi Cyndie,

We are moving in to a rental home.  The house has a different color in each room, oak hardwood floors, 1929.  The style from the exterior is colonial, however, inside the owners have done oak woodwork, kitchen, etc., almost an arts and crafts style.  Is there a Benjamin Moore flat color you think would lighten the darkness of the house, yet be neutral?  There are a lot of tree surrounding the home too. I was thinking one color thoughout would make the cut up rooms look larger. Thank you!

Debbie

Answer
Hi Debbie,

First, if you don't have a lot of natural light, I would recommend staying away from those color which have a gray undertone to them. It may be the colors on the wall are making it "look and feel"dark and once you paint, you may be surprised at how much brighter it will look and feel.

If you want a good neutral color, take a look at BM Standish White or their Affinity line Jicama.  Both take on a yellow undertone.  I'm not sure if this is the direction you want to go or not, but yellow is a very uplifting color which will help with the darkness of the room.

If yellow doesn't appeal to you, let me know and I will look for an alternate, theses are kind of in the yellow/tan group.

Thanks for asking.  I hope this helps you.
