Painting & Wallpapering - patchy painted walls

Expert: Tony Gallagher - 6/25/2009

Question
QUESTION: hi, i recently painted walls in living room, but when the sunlight shines on them they look incredibly patchy, i have tried polycell basecoat on 1 wall, with no improvement, i have also repainted a nember of times but to no avail, thanks

ANSWER: Danny,

You omit to say which finish you are using.  If you have used a product such as Pollycell as a barrier coat then that indicates the finish is not being affected by the substrate.
My best bet without seeing the problem, is that you are experiencing flashing, that is over laying of film and giving a different shade which then appears to be patchy.

This is more prevalent with finishes that have a sheen level such as vinyl silk and soft sheen.
If you are prepared to us a vinyl matt product you can eliminate the problem in one coat.  Using a good quality trade product such as Crown, Permoglaze or Macphersons vinyl matt (NOT BOUGHT AT THE SHEDS) thin the application with about 20% water and apply with a woven roller head and this should solve the problem.

If you do want a sheen finish then you could do exactly the same but increase the water part to between 25-30

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Tony

QUESTION: hi, thankyou for your reply, i used a matt dulux finish on walls, so i will thin it out by 20%. do u think it would be advisable to thin out a matt white emulsion (dulux) rather than the barley white matt that i have used? would u apply with a brush (used roller previously), could i use a thinned primer instead? thankyou

Answer
Danny,

If the Dulux was retail quality from B & Q or Wickes etc, it will not take the dilution.  No it doesn't matter about the shade because even with white you can get flashing.

NO NOT THE PRIMER, as stated I don't think this problem is beneath the surface finish.

Regards,

Tony.
