Question Hi Mr. Gallagher, I live in a mobile home and would like to repaint my daughter's room, It was painted before but paint is peeling, no her dad did not use a primer. Her walls are made out of drywall with a layer of decorative wallpaper (as assembled from the lot). My daughter has been using Duck tape to peel off the paint, since scraping does not work. Shes tired of using duck tape so I am just wondering if I should just replace the drywall. Is there a better way to take off paint before I go ahead with the replacement? What steps should we follow when we repaint? Thanks
Answer Regina,
I wish I had a 'Miracle' remedy but unfortunately the problem would appear to be Key. All loose and suspect material would have to be removed. There are several stripping compounds available but each one will involve a great deal of labour and not insignificant cost.
In the UK we have a product called Peel-A-Way which is a system that you apply a stripper and cover with a plastic blanket which is left overnight and then you just peel off bringing the paint off in one action.
I am pretty sure there will be plenty of products available on the Internet.
You will have to consider the cost against as you suggest re skimming the dry wall.
In either case you should then ensure adhesion which should be done with a suitable primer.
My favourite primers are made by Zinsser (easily available on the Internet) They have several primer sealers that act like double sided tape adhering to the substrate and making a sound base for your preferred finish.
